The History of Mindfulness: North America

mindfulness history

The history of mindfulness is rooted in several ancient religions and practices, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Tibetan Buddhism. But how did it find its way to the West? Buddhism is a complex case. This is because it doesn't have any theological doctrines or God. Instead, it focuses on transformation in one life and rebirth the next. In the West, however, Buddhism is primarily associated with health psychology. These cultures share many similarities, as well as the history and practice of mindfulness.

Buddhism

The history of mindfulness is rooted in early Buddhism. Jon Kabat Zinn, a Professor of Medicine, adapted the teachings of Buddha for Western culture and created the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic in Massachusetts in 1978. Kabat-Zinn's program was originally called the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program and was later renamed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Though he didn’t make explicit reference to Buddhism in his work however, it was widely regarded by the public as being scientific.

Westerners first became interested in Eastern philosophy around the end of the nineteenth century. However, Western meditation was only popularized in the mid-20th century. At this time, renowned eastern meditation masters began to visit the West to share their techniques with western students. Many Western students have begun to travel to Asia to receive instruction from the greatest masters. But how did mindfulness come to be so widely accepted? By following a few key milestones, it has come a long way from its early days as a niche practice.

Hinduism

While mindfulness and Buddhism both have a reputation for their meditative practices and mindfulness, Hinduism boasts a long and interesting history. In Hindu scripture, there are references to silence, acceptance, meditation, and acceptance. This ancient religion predates Christianity and Buddhism by many millennia. Its founding scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, discusses these practices. Buddhist meditation is based in Hinduism. Siddhartha Gautama, founder of Buddhism was born and raised in India. His education was influenced greatly by Hinduism.

The Bhagavadgita can be found in large libraries all across the United States. Buddhism is not only rooted in Hinduism, but also embraces Hindu meditation techniques. The Upanishads (ancient Hindu scriptures) are rich in references to meditation silence and acceptance. These principles are supported by many Hindu teachers. Mindfulness involves focusing your attention on the present moment and not on the past or the future.

Tibetan Buddhism

Late Indian Buddhism was the first to transmit Buddhist teachings in Tibet. The eighth-to-thirteenth centuries saw the emergence of interactions between Indian traditions. Invasion, institutional competition and scarcity of resources had nearly made Buddhism disappear from India by the fourteenth century. It was then that Tibet became the centre of Buddhism in central Asia. The religion spread to nearby countries. Tibetan Buddhism's history is rich in mythology, history, and philosophy.

Buddhist teachings usually present meditation in a therapeutic way to deal with dissatisfaction over embodied existence. The practice is divided into three major phases. "Giving & taking" meditation involves the meditator controlling his or her breathing and their relationship to all other beings. The first stage involves the meditator being in a state where he/she experiences a connection to two contrasting realms, or the two worlds.
